US may approve aid package for Georgia if it abandons the law on "foreign agents" — Politico
The US bill, prompted by the adoption of Georgia's controversial law on "foreign agents", may contain a package of economic and security support for Tbilisi if it abandons anti-Western rhetoric
According to the terms of the draft law, which is to be presented in the House of Representatives this week, the United States, if Georgia meets political criteria, will begin negotiations on opening a preferential trade regime and liberalize the visa regime for Georgians.
The document also authorizes the White House to develop a military support package for Georgia, including "providing security and defense equipment that is ideally suited for territorial defense against Russian aggression, as well as related training, maintenance, and operations support elements".
It is noted that for this, the United States must confirm that "Georgia has demonstrated significant and sustained progress in the revival of democracy, as evidenced, at a minimum, by fair and free elections and a balanced electoral environment".
- On the eve, it was reported that the U.S. Congress in a new bill plans to freeze the assets and travel bans of Georgian officials responsible for promoting the law on "foreign agents".
