The agency emphasized that the sanctions are aimed at the regime of Daniel Ortega in Nicaragua and its ability to manipulate the gold mining sector and profit from corrupt operations. It is indicated that the Russian Federation has set up a training center in Managua to conduct specialized courses for the Nicaraguan national police to train security forces that could be used by the regime.
"It (the training center — ed.) is a key player in the Nicaraguan regime's repression of civil society and the unjust detention and imprisonment of individuals for expressing dissent or otherwise peacefully exercising their human rights and fundamental freedoms", the report said.
The US sanctions also include COMINTSA and Capital Mining, which specialize in gold mining.
- Earlier, the US Treasury Department announced sanctions against nearly 200 individuals and entities that assist Russia's military-industrial complex and help it evade restrictions.
