The Russian occupation army has advanced no more than 8 kilometers from the border since the beginning of the intensification of offensive actions in Kharkiv region

It is noted that the pace of Russian offensive operations in the north of Kharkiv region continues to decline after the occupiers initially seized areas that Ukrainian officials have now confirmed were less defended.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and the Ukrainian military said that Ukrainian troops have partially stabilized the situation in the northern Kharkiv region.

As of May 16, ISW estimates that Russian forces have advanced no more than eight kilometers from the international border in the northern Kharkiv region. They can easily hit Ukrainian defensive positions near the international border with artillery.

But the prohibition on using Western-supplied weapons systems to strike Russian rear areas across the border leaves fixed Ukrainian defensive positions near the border vulnerable and possibly defenseless.

"Since May 10, Russian forces have been able to make tactical advances in northern Kharkiv region in areas where Ukrainian forces have deliberately failed to establish significant defensive lines and currently appear to favor creating a "buffer zone" over deep penetration into Kharkiv region", the analysts added.
  • Russians continue to attack along almost the entire front line. They focus their main efforts on Pokrovske and Kupianske directions.
