Cult directors Martin Scorsese, Francis Coppola, and James Cameron have repeatedly criticized superhero films of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Scorsese has repeatedly called these films "not cinema" and even stated that they pose a threat to the industry.
James Cameron noted that the characters in superhero comics lack depth, they are not familiar with things that give a sense of support, strength, love and purpose.
Filmmaker Francis Ford Coppola also spoke about Marvel movies in an interview with GQ in 2022, calling them "one prototype movie that's made over and over again to look different".
In a recent interview with The Times, Chris Hemsworth, who has played Thor in the Marvel Cinematic Universe since 2011, commented on the directors' statements.
"It's been hard. And it annoys me, especially from the characters. I rolled my eyes when people criticized the superhero world. Those guys had movies that didn't do well either — we all have them. When they talked about what was wrong with superheroes, I thought: "Cool, tell that to the billions who watch them. Were they all wrong?" the actor said.
He also responded to the criticism about movie attendance, which was allegedly negatively affected by superhero films. "Cinema attendance has changed not because of superheroes, but because of smartphones and social media", Hemsworth said. The actor also emphasized that "superhero movies actually kept people in theaters during that transition, and now people are coming back. So they deserve a little bit more credit".
He also added:
"Look, I grew up watching soap operas. And it used to bother me that the actors would talk about these shows later on with a sense of guilt or shame. Humility is very important".
Earlier, Marvel movie director Joe Russo responded to Scorsese's criticism. In a humorous video, he emphasized that his film "Avengers: Endgame" received higher box office receipts than Martin Scorsese's films.
Hollywood director James Cameron criticized Marvel and DC characters for lack of emotional depth. He stated that no matter how old the characters are, they all behave as if they are studying in college.
