Special traditions: Junii Brașovului or Parada Junilor
The city of Brașov has a rich history and cultural heritage related to horse-related traditions. The horse plays an important role in the life of the locals and is a symbol of strength, pride and loyalty.
One of the most famous horse-related traditions in Brașov is the "Junii Brașovului" or "Parada Junilor" festival. This is a magnificent parade that is one of the most popular events in Brașov, attracting thousands of tourists from all over the country and the world every year.
"Junii Brașovului" is one of the oldest and most impressive traditions in the city. This tradition dates back to ancient times and reflects the rich cultural heritage of the Romanian people.
"Junii Brașovului" is a group of young men, elegantly dressed in traditional costumes representing different neighborhoods of Brașov, demonstrating their skill on horseback in graceful parades and dances.
Each neighborhood has its own group of "Junii" who celebrate the holiday on the Sunday after Easter, this day is called Tomei Sunday. This holiday was initiated by the first inhabitants of Brașov, who settled in the old neighborhood called Shei in the 14th century. Although the first mention of this appeared in a document from 1728, there are historians who believe that this tradition goes back even further, starting with Dacia.
First, this parade celebrates the rebirth of nature, the victory over winter and the beginning of a new life. In fact, it represents the ritual initiation of young men known as "juni", which means "young and unmarried men". On this day, "junii" dress in traditional costumes, brightly colored shirts and wide belts. They take to the streets of the city, where they organize parades on horseback, perform dances and songs, and arrange various entertainments for visitors and residents.
The parade features seven groups of men aged 17 to 46, each group having its own leader, called a "vătaf". All groups are distinguished by their military costumes and military dances, reflecting pride in their country and military history. Each of the groups is unique and reflects ancient Romanian traditions and rituals and demonstrates the deep ties between the country's past and present.
"Junii Brașovului" is not only a celebration and entertainment, but also a way to honor and preserve traditions and cultural heritage. This tradition continues to live and evolve, inspiring future generations to preserve their heritage and identity.
As the sun goes down and darkness gradually envelops the sky, the parade marks its end with an extraordinary spectacle — a fireworks display that paints the sky in different colors.
So, visiting Brașov, you will get an unforgettable experience of its beauty, traditions, history and culture that will remain in your memory for a long time.
