Ukrainian is the leading language in social networks in Ukraine
Significant growth of Ukrainian-language posts was detected on Facebook, X, Instagram, YouTube and TikTok
According to the annual report of the Language Ombudsman, Ukraine has seen a noticeable increase in the number of posts in Ukrainian on leading social media. The study covered more than a million posts, including an analysis of content on platforms that are banned in Ukraine, such as Odnoklassniki and Vkontakte. The analysis took into account information about the place of residence of users, including those in the temporarily occupied territories.
"The changes in the ratio between Ukrainian and russian on social media that took place from October 2020 to October 2023 are very revealing. The Ukrainian language now dominates almost all popular social networks", the ombudsman said.
In particular, more than 90% of all posts on Instagram are written in Ukrainian. On Facebook and X (Twitter), this figure is 75-80%, which is significantly higher than three years ago, when the share of Ukrainian-language posts was only 15-25%.
In addition, TikTok has seen a doubling of the amount of Ukrainian-language content. But the largest increase in the share of the Ukrainian language was noted on YouTube, where the share of Ukrainian-language content increased from 5% to 45% in a year and a half after the start of the full-scale invasion of russia. Taras Kremin, the language ombudsman, also noted that in 2023, not a single russian song was broadcast on national television and radio companies.
