Why Polish oppositionists resorted to protests

Deputies of the Polish opposition party Law and Justice have occupied the premises where the country's public media are located. In this way, they are trying to protect the Polish press from the new government's "encroachment" on freedom of speech.

This was reported by Ukrinform .

The Polish Sejm on Tuesday evening adopted a resolution with 244 votes on the need to restore the impartial work of the country's public media: TVP, Polish Radio, and the Polish Press Agency - PAP. There were 84 MPs against, 16 abstained, and more than a hundred MPs did not take part in the vote.

It notes that during the two parliamentary cadences of the previous government, public media "lost their mission and role", defined as a right and public need for access to unbiased information, and became an instrument of propaganda by Jaroslaw Kaczynski's party and the PiS government.

This resolution caused a protest in the opposition Law and Justice (PiS) party, whose deputies are now on duty at TVP around the clock.

In the evening after the vote, PiS leader Kaczynski said that groups of 10 party members would be on duty at the TVP headquarters.

"Our protest is a defense of democracy, because there is no democracy without media pluralism and without strong anti-government media, and in Poland it is public media", - Kaczynski said.

It should be noted that before the election, the newly elected government stated that after the victory they would liquidate TVP Info, which, in their opinion, became the party mouthpiece of PiS.

We remind you that the new Minister of Culture and National Heritage of Poland Bartłomiej Sienkiewicz dismissed the management of TVP, Polish Radio, PAP, as well as the supervisory boards of these media, appointing new members in their place.
