Maersk plans to stop shipping through the Red Sea due to the growing threat of pirate attacks
Houthis in Yemen, allied to Hamas, have decided to block sea routes for all ships with links to Israel
The world leader in container transportation and port management, the Danish logistics company Moller-Maersk Group, has decided to suspend transportation through the Red Sea due to attacks by Yemeni Houthis.
Bloomberg writes about it.
The company said that this decision was made after recent incidents, such as the attack on the container ship Maersk Gibraltar. All Maersk vessels that have to pass through the Bab el-Mandeh Strait have been instructed to stop moving until further notice.
The company emphasized that the safety of crews is a priority, and it is obliged to balance the needs of customers with the duty to ensure the safety of its personnel. Yemen is located on the coast of the Red and Arabian Seas and the Gulf of Aden.
The Bab el-Mandeb Strait plays a critical role in global trade, with 12% of merchant ships passing through and about 10% of all oil transported by sea. The Yemeni Houthis, allies of Hamas who are fighting against Israel, have decided to block the sea routes for all ships linked to Israel.
