The subtleties of an "open marriage": Will Smith and Jada Pinkett-Smith have not lived as spouses for a long time

Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith

Jada Pinkett Smith, wife of American actor and producer Will Smith, unexpectedly announced that they parted ways seven years ago. She pointed out that this happened six years before the high-profile scandal that erupted during the 2022 Oscars, when Will Smith hit host Chris Rock on air for making an offensive joke about her.

"We continue to work on understanding the situation. We are actively working on ourselves. The love between us is deep, and we're trying to determine its true nature," Jada said in an interview with the American publication People.

The actress also shared her thoughts on her children: Jaden, 25, Willow, 22, and Trey, 30. "My children are my little sages. They have taught me a deep sense of self-acceptance. They love every part of me. The level of unconditional love they have for me and their father is incredible. And there are two different sides to this coin - the desire to give such unconditional love and the ability to receive it," she said.

As a reminder, Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith got married in December 1997. However, in 2020, Jada stunned everyone by announcing that she had been in a relationship with young singer August Alsina for 4.5 years.

Later on, Smith articulated their arrangement as an "open marriage". Focusing on "friendship rather than family responsibilities", the couple spent time apart and dated other people, although, according to Smith, they "never officially divorced".
