Okean Elzy: 29 Years of Music Inspiring Ukrainians Amidst War
Okean Elzy has once again proved its significant role in the modern history of Ukraine, inspiring with its creations. The band is celebrating its 29th anniversary, and the members share this joyful event with a short message tagged '29' on social media and by posting photos from their stadium concert.
During the russian aggression in Ukraine, Okean Elzy acted as a symbol of resistance, and their songs, such as "Hugs" and "I Won't Give Up Without a Fight", became unofficial anthems of war. The band actively engages audiences through world tours, raising funds to support the Ukrainian military. In six months of 2023, they managed to raise over UAH 25 million.
The band's leader, Svyatoslav Vakarchuk, not only performs at concerts, but also visits hotspots of the Ukrainian frontline to give concerts to the military. Over the course of more than a year and a half of the war, the band has released several new songs and re-released old ones, giving them new meaning.
To commemorate their anniversary, here are five powerful songs that resonate with the Ukrainian struggle:
"City of Mary" is a song dedicated to Mariupol and its heroic defenders.
"UA So Beautiful" is a cover of Joe Cocker's hit song, which depicts the beautiful side of Ukraine.
"Flowers of Mine Zones" - the lyrics are combined with an impressive video that recreates the reality of war at the front and in the rear.
"When we are two" - a duet with singer KOLA, telling about families separated by war.
"I'm Going Home" is a new interpretation of the 2003 song dedicated to sappers who clear the territory of mines.
Okean Elzy continues to leave its mark on history by creating music that carries an important message for the Ukrainian people.
