Florin Cîțu, prosecuted by DNA
He is under criminal investigation for complicity in abuse of office
Prosecutors from the National Anticorruption Directorate - Anti-Corruption Section have decided to continue criminal proceedings against Florin Cîțu, current senator and former Prime Minister of the Romanian Government. He is suspected of two offenses of complicity in abuse of office with particularly serious consequences.
According to the prosecutors ' order, the suspect, as Prime Minister of the Government, would have approved two memoranda, on 19 April 2021 and 13 May 2021, issued by the Ministry of Health. These would have led to the contracting of a large number of doses of vaccine (Pfizer and Moderna) when he would have known that the number of people eligible for vaccination communicated by the Romanian state to the European Commission was 10.7 million.
Although the vaccine doses contracted prior to 1 January 2021 would have been sufficient to vaccinate more than 23 million people, the suspect allegedly enabled the Ministry of Health's procurement and payment for an additional 43,359,892 vaccine doses at a cost of €825,636,678 excluding VAT.
Cîțu has been informed of the charges under the Code of Criminal Procedure, and criminal proceedings are also under way against other persons.
It is recalled that the person charged with a criminal offense is presumed innocent until proven guilty by a final court decision.
