12.4% fewer people killed in road accidents in 2023
Main causes of serious road accidents remain constant, including inappropriate speed for road conditions
According to statements by the director of the office of the Inspector General of the Romanian Police, Georgian Drăgan, the number of people killed in road accidents in 2023 decreased by 12.4% compared to 2019. However, he stressed that there is still work to be done in order to reach the goal of the National Strategy for Road Safety 2022–2030, which aims to reduce by 50% the number of people killed and seriously injured in road accidents.
Main causes of road accidents
Georgian Drăgan noted that the main causes of serious road accidents remain constant, including inappropriate speed for road conditions, cyclists' deviations, jaywalking, failure to give way to pedestrians and failure to give way to vehicles.
Road Safety Projects and Investments
To improve road safety, projects and investments in road safety education, traffic monitoring and integrated actions to increase safety on road infrastructure have been implemented. These include the purchase of mobile laboratories for preventive-education activities, the provision of traffic monitoring technology and the implementation of an integrated ground-to-air concept using helicopters for intervention and monitoring.
These efforts are part of a wider effort to achieve road safety targets and reduce the risk of accidents on Romania's roads.
