Long-distance travel is always memorable and full of amazing experiences. However, travelling abroad can put you at risk of diseases that are not typical for Ukraine. This is especially true in exotic countries that are so popular with travellers.

The Public Health Centre shared information for Ukrainians on vaccination before travelling abroad.

Vaccination is one of the most effective ways to protect your health when travelling abroad. Therefore, before travelling to any country, make sure you are thoroughly prepared for your trip:

Gather the necessary information:

  • What infectious diseases are common in the region?

  • Are there any warnings about outbreaks of dangerous diseases?

  • Are there any mandatory vaccinations required to cross the border?

Consult your family doctor. This should be done at least a month before departure, as most vaccines should be administered in advance to fully protect against diseases. Be sure to discuss your itinerary with your doctor and get advice on any necessary vaccinations or specific treatments before you travel.

Check that you are up-to-date with all your routine vaccinations, as some need to be updated regularly. This applies, for example, to diphtheria, tetanus, measles and mumps.

Each country may have its own vaccination requirements, so check with your embassy or travel agent beforehand. Here are some of them:

In some countries in Asia and Africa, it is important to have full protection against polio.

Countries in tropical Africa, Central and South America may require an international certificate of immunisation, including a yellow fever vaccination

If you are travelling to places with high levels of unsanitary conditions, ensure you are vaccinated against hepatitis A and B.

Consider a typhoid vaccination if you intend to visit countries in South Africa and Asia.

If you plan to have contact with animals or visit rural areas, a rabies vaccination is recommended.

Before travelling to African countries along the meningitis belt, get vaccinated against meningococcal infection.

If you are travelling to Austria, the Czech Republic, Hungary, or the Baltic States in spring or early autumn, consider getting vaccinated against tick-borne encephalitis.

Don't forget that any disease is easier to prevent than to cure, so take care of your health and enjoy your trip without unnecessary risks.
