Anti-tobacco revolution
France pounces with expanded bans and increased taxes
France is preparing to strike a major blow against smoking, announcing a series of radical measures aimed at turning the country into a bastion against tobacco and creating the "first tobacco-free generation" by 2032. Here's how this anti-smoking revolution is progressing:
Tobacco days on beaches are coming to an end: the French government is to ban smoking on all beaches, changing the outlook for seaside relaxation and turning these areas into tobacco-free spaces. The decision will put an end to the habit of lighting cigarettes on France's scenic shores, according to The Guardian.
Extended bans in key places: The measures don't just stop at beaches; public parks, forests and areas near schools will also become tobacco-free sanctuaries. Health minister Aurélien Rousseau says "tobacco-free zones will become the norm".
Rising taxes on cigarettes: To hit where it counts, the government is proposing to raise taxes on cigarettes. A pack of cigarettes, now priced at around €11, will rise to €12 by 2025 and €13 the following year.
Stop disposable e-cigarettes: The measures also target single-use e-cigarettes, popular among young people. The government seeks to combat their impact on health and the environment.
Health and environment in focus: The main objective of this movement is to combat the harmful impact of smoking on public health, given the approximately 75,000 avoidable deaths per year in France. It also focuses on protecting the environment, given the problem of cigarette butts left on beaches.
War on smuggling: With the "explosion" of smuggled cigarettes, the government is seeking to combat the phenomenon and maintain the integrity of the tobacco market.
This anti-smoking revolution puts France at the forefront of global efforts to reduce tobacco consumption and promotes healthier lifestyles and a cleaner environment.
