For the first time in the world: Ukraine ensures physical protection of energy facilities
For six months, from October 2022 to March 2023, Russians attacked Ukraine's critical infrastructure. Serhiy Popko, head of the Kyiv City Military Administration, said that in the summer, Ukraine created physical protection for its energy infrastructure for the first time in the world.
According to the Kyiv City Military Administration, Russians damaged approximately 63% of the capital's energy facilities over the past year. Meanwhile, energy experts and utilities have already completed work to restore Kyiv's thermal power plants.
"Physical protection structures for energy facilities have been built, and backup power supply schemes and options for overcoming possible consequences have been developed - also for the first time in the world," Popko said.
According to him, this year the efforts of air defence, authorities, power engineers and utilities will be consolidated to protect facilities from the effects of missile attacks.
As for the state of Ukraine's power grid, as of October 2023, according to Ukrenergo, 411 settlements were without electricity as a result of hostilities and strong winds and rain. Electricity is currently being imported from Slovakia and Moldova to compensate for the power shortage.
