Devastating Lightning Strikes in Gujarat, India
24 Dead, 23 Injured Over Two Days
The western Indian state of Gujarat has witnessed tragic events over the past two days, with 24 people killed, and 23 others injured in lightning strikes.
The intensity of the rains, accompanied by lightning and hail, created dangerous conditions in different parts of the state, causing significant damage to homes and loss of life, Digi24 reports.
The rainfall was so heavy that in some areas, 144 mm of rain was recorded in just 24 hours. Gujarat Agriculture Minister Raghavij Patel said that a damage assessment will be carried out and victims will be compensated based on the results.
Gujarat regularly faces natural calamities, and this tragedy comes just a few years after similar events. In August 2020, 14 people died in just two days due to heavy rains and floods and in August 2019, 31 people were killed in the same region due to heavy rainfall. The India Meteorological Department has forecast that rains will continue in parts of Gujarat on Monday.
