A recent report by the Romanian police has revealed a worrying increase in the number of road accidents involving electric scooters in recent years, reports Agerpres. The data shows a significant increase in accident cases nationwide, from 42 in 2018 to 2,218 in 2022, representing an increase of over 52 times.

In the last three years, the number of electric scooter accidents has doubled year-on-year, reaching 2,218 in 2022. However, the report notes that the number of cyclists killed in traffic remains the highest, with between 100 and 200 people losing their lives every year in road accidents, regardless of fault.

Annual analysis of the data reveals that in 2018, there were 42 accidents involving scooters, with eight people seriously injured, while cyclists were involved in 4,490 accidents, resulting in 1,051 people seriously injured and 183 fatalities.

Despite the significant increase in accidents involving electric scooters, the report points out that the highest number of fatalities remains associated with bicycles. The Romanian Police spokesperson stressed the importance of analyzing and properly regulating the circulation of these alternative means of transport to ensure road safety.
