El Nino threatens new temperature records by April 2024
The warning comes from the World Meteorological Organization
According to projections by weather services, including those of the US government, El Nino could bring new temperature records, generating extreme weather events such as forest fires, tropical cyclones and extended periods of drought. The impact on emerging economies is expected to be significant, as they are more exposed to food and energy price fluctuations.
In the release issued by the WMO, and picked up by Reuters, the year 2023 is on track to become the warmest on record, surpassing the previous record set in 2016. This is attributed to both the El Nino phenomenon and the impact of warming induced by the burning of fossil fuels.
The El Nino phenomenon has already generated global disasters and its consequences seem set to worsen, endangering climate balance and directly affecting emerging economies and market resources. It is imperative that the international community closely monitor developments and take appropriate measures to manage the impact on the environment and society.
