The Republic of Moldova has been given the green light to start accession negotiations with the European Union, news welcomed enthusiastically and commitment by the country's officials. President Maia Sandu underlined that this step represents recognition of the joint efforts of state institutions and citizens, stressing that accession to the European Union is "our unique chance to guarantee a future of peace, freedom and prosperity". Statements by Prime Minister Dorin Recean, Speaker of Parliament Igor Grosu and Foreign Minister Nicu Popescu also reflect a deep commitment to reform, modernization and adaptation to European standards, considering this decision as a historic moment for the Republic of Moldova.

Maia Sandu, President of the Republic of Moldova:

"This step is a recognition of our common effort - of the state institutions, which are working to transform the country, and of the citizens, who choose peace, democracy and development.The Republic of Moldova in the European Union is our only chance to guarantee a future of peace, freedom and prosperity for the whole country".

Dorin Recean, Prime Minister of the Republic of Moldova:

"Important day for the Republic of Moldova... This is the path our citizens have chosen and the result of the work we have all done. A recognition of our efforts to harmonise national legislation with European legislation, to strengthen state institutions, to modernise villages and towns, and to adapt to EU standards and values".

Igor Grosu, President of the Parliament of Moldova:

"This decision makes us even more determined in the process of transforming the Republic of Moldova through the reforms we are making. The European Union is not only a better future for our children, the European Union means a better present for Moldovans, it means a strong economy, developed villages and cities, safety and security, reliable friends".

Nicu Popescu, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Moldova:
"The Commission's opinion is a strong sign of support for our European objective, but also a recognition of the substantial progress the Republic of Moldova has made. From this day on, we continue with the Member States of the European Union, with the European Commission to prepare our country for negotiations".
