Ukrainian culture shines at La Mercè in Barcelona
On September 22, 2023, Kyiv showcased the history and culture of Ukraine in Spain. Ukrainian sculptures became part of the annual La Mercè festival, the main celebration of Barcelona. The festive event began with a solemn procession of Ukrainian giant figures depicting Princess Olga and Prince Volodymyr.
This was announced by the Mayor of Kyiv, Vitalii Klitschko in his Telegram . For the first time in the history of the Barcelona festival, giant dolls representing the hero city were presented. Typically, such figures are associated with local culture and history, but this time they originated from Ukraine.
"Tonight, the grand festival kicked off with a solemn procession of Ukrainian giants portraying Princess Olga and Prince Volodymyr. These images represent the history of our state and the path we have travelled over the centuries. It's a history that Russia is trying to steal and destroy," Klitschko explained.
The Kyiv giants, created from Ukrainian sketches by Catalan craftsmen, performed at the opening of the celebration to the musical accompaniment of the Cossack March performed by Catalan musicians. They were also accompanied by a dance from the performers of the Kyiv Ukrainian Folklore Theater "Berehynia".
La Mercè is a traditional festival that takes place at the end of September in Barcelona and lasts for a week. The city is filled with songs, dances, street performances, installations, and performances. It's worth noting that Kyiv and Barcelona became sister cities last year, fostering cultural and diplomatic initiatives between them.
