Arms supply agreement: USA, South Korea, and Japan are against
On September 22nd in New York, the Minister of Foreign Affairs of South Korea, Park Jin, met with his counterparts from the USA and Japan: Anthony Blinken and Yoko Kamikawa, to discuss issues related to a potential agreement between Russia and North Korea regarding arms. Diplomats expressed their readiness to cooperate with international organisations. The USA expressed its intention to strengthen sanctions against North Korea for supporting Russia in the war with Ukraine.
According to the Yonhap Agency, it became known that the potential arms agreement between Pyongyang and Moscow violates United Nations Security Council resolutions that were once voted on by Russia.
Furthermore, a bill by Senators Jerry Connolly and Joe Wilson was published on the U.S. Congress website: "To Provide for Sanctions on Support of North Korea's Unlawful War with Russia in Ukraine."
According to this bill, the U.S. President will have the authority to impose sanctions on any foreign individual involved in the transfer or sale of arms, or anyone providing material support from North Korea for the use by Russian forces in Ukraine. Senator Connolly emphasised, "Material support for Russia's unlawful war in Ukraine from Kim Jong Un creates a dangerous partnership between two wrongdoers threatening global peace."
According to the Senator, it is time for the United States to take decisive action and prevent the use of North Korean weapons in Putin's bloody war against the Ukrainian people.
To recap, on September 13, 2023, Russian President Vladimir Putin and North Korean President Kim Jong Un held a meeting at the "Vostochny" Cosmodrome. Regarding the purpose of the visit, Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov stated, "Of course, as neighbours, our countries cooperate in certain sensitive areas that should not be publicly disclosed or announced."
